Starving Artistry
Des Artistes

We are a couple of artists. We make art. And we spend all our money on stuff that feeds our creative passions. The downside? Starvation. Not literal starvation (well yes, sometimes literal, but hey we've got priorities). Let's just say every paycheck is like a gift from the gods, arriving JUST in time so that we can continue living indoors. This page is dedicated to the struggles (and VICTORIES) of living the life of a Starving Artist.

You can contribute to our cause by clicking on any of the wondrous links on this page and buying stuff we like. We promise you'll like it too, and you can feel good about feeding some good-souled albeit sometimes misguided artistes.

Pollock: The Movie, The Artist

It's important to mention that we don't watch movies much.  Seriously, if it's been out of theaters for more than five years we might have it on our list of "must-sees."  So naturally, we just watched Pollock for the first time (it's only been out since 2000!).  Aside from Ed Harris delivering an incredible performance and impressive directorial debut, the film, based on the life of American Abstract Expressionist painter Jackson Pollock, gave me a whole new appreciation for Pollock's body of work that goes way beyond his more widely recognized "drip" style paintings.  I've seen the latter in galleries, and they've never really spoken to me.  But to watch him come alive on screen and to "witness" his all-too-familiar struggle really did it for me.  A true artist in a completely unique moment in time.  I highly recommend the film, and you can find it on Amazon or on Netflix.  Now all I need is a Peggy Guggenheim to stroll through our apartment and give us a show :)

Jackson Pollock [Hardcover] on Amazon ~ Really great photo/bio book featuring Pollock's legacy of work.

Pollock [DVD] on Amazon ~ Although the film is not out on Blu-Ray yet, the standard DVD will play on any player, and is a great addition to any collection.

First of All... Ode to My Camera

Canon PowerShot SD780IS

This camera does not replace a nice DSLR for really top-notch pictures, and in any premeditated photo session my Rebel will always win.  What it does replace though, is that constant debate: do I lug my Camera and be "taking pictures guy" or do I just go and enjoy the event/moment/day?  It is smaller than a cell phone, has one of the best looking designs of a digital camera I've seen in a long time, and takes such good point-and-shoot photos that it is practically impossible for me not to get compliments on mere snapshots.

I take it everywhere with me.  I can throw it in my purse, stuff it in my pocket, or stash it in my bicycle pouch without hesitation or the nagging thought, "will I really NEED my camera for this?" because there is just no reason not to.  And this take-anywhere convenience is wholely responsible for 90% of my photos these days, whether they end up as graphic elements, art pieces, or stock photos (yes, it's that good).

All the photos here were taken with the Canon Powershot SD780IS with little or no retouching.  I've included many macro shots as well as a few more candid photos.  PLEASE NOTE: The name of my cat has been changed to protect the innocent. =)
